NOVEMBER NEWSLETTER, 2007
CHRISTMAS FUNDRAISING EVENT
This Friday, 23rd November, at 3.30p.m. we will be hosting a seasonal stalls event. Chocoholics, Virgin Vie, Avon and Candlelite, will be selling gifts for Christmas and there will also be stalls selling children’s clothes, handmade cards, magnetic and handmade jewellery. The entry fee is £1 for adults and 50p for children. The numbers on the entry tickets will be included in the raffle, with many prizes from the stallholders. Refreshments will be served, so bring along friends and family and do a spot of Christmas shopping.

SCHOOL ACTION PLAN
Everyone received a copy of the OfSTED report and now we have an action plan that has been approved by OfSTED and the Local Authority, all 19 pages of it. If you wish to come and have a look there is a copy on my office wall and one in each classroom. Many of the issues have already been dealt with, but there are many more developments to be completed.

HEALTHY SCHOOLS
This morning we hosted a healthy lunchbox event, with many children trying several types of bread with healthy fillings, then fruit, juices and snacks that they hadn’t encountered before. Most children tried everything and were surprised how good it all tasted. Many thanks to the school nurse and Miss Robinson for organising this event.
Want to give up smoking for Christmas? The school nurse is holding drop in smoking cessation sessions on the afternoon of Monday 3rd December.

FOOD FROM OUR KITCHENS
The supervisor for the kitchens run by Peterborough City Council was in school today, discussing the ingredients used to produce healthy school dinners. She informed us that all meet and poultry can be traced from supplier, to slaughter house, to farm, everything as organic as possible. All vegetables are local grown, with Broccoli, salad items and root vegetables from a supplier in Lincoln, all apples are British varieties grown locally and the blueberries are from a specialist grower in Cambridge. We are the only school in Peterborough that still serves milkshakes and biscuits, which several parents have objected to, there being e numbers in the colours and artificial flavours for the milk shakes and too much sugar in the biscuits. Therefore, at the end of this month the kitchens will stop providing this service. Although the government supplies free fruit to some of the children in school, everyone may have a piece free of charge, as school pays for additional deliveries, enough for every child to have one piece per day. So please encourage them to eat whatever is available.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROSITY
The school raised £41.98 for the Royal British legion Poppy Appeal and £233.13 for Children in Need

PARKING
Oh dear! We are having terrible trouble with people using the staff car park that are not staff. There are only sufficient places for each member of staff. We are supposed to leave the entrance gates and the path to the double gates into the playground clear for the emergency services. Over the past week we have had a taxi hit a parents car and two staff cars being hit by vehicles that should not be in that car park. Should this continue we may have to resort to wheel clamping. Should you wish to have access to breakfast club prior to 8.30, the delivery entrance is open, after that time there is free parking in the High Street opposite school and the children can cross using the Lollipop Lady on the corner of St Margaret’s Road and High Street.

CLASS OF THE WEEK
For some time the children have been pestering for a Class of the Week prize. So on Tuesday 6th November we held a special assembly for all the children and most of the staff to decide what the prize would be for. The children proposed, bringing homework in on time, wearing school uniform, remembering book bags, PE and swimming kits, and all those letters that are to be returned by a certain date would be the reason for each child receiving a point. They also chose to lose points if things had been forgotten. Every Monday each class starts with 50 points and on Friday all class points are collected by 2pm. The class with the most points receives a prize at the first assembly of the following week. There have been some arguments about what constitutes school uniform. It is as listed in the school brochure, which does not say anything about hair ribbons or socks!

JEWELLERY CLARIFICATION
In my last newsletter I laid out the national rules for jewellery in school. One stud per ear and a watch is all that is permitted, unless parents wish to take out private insurance and bring a copy of the policy to school. ALL JEWELLERY has to be removed for P.E. Watches to go in children’s drawers as well as the ear studs. If the ears have recently been pierced they need a supply of plasters or surgical tapes to cover the studs. As neither items is permitted for staff to use in school, please make sure your child has their personal supply if required.

CHANGES TO THE SCHOOL BUILDING
The building should start work before the end of this term. An additional store is being built onto the hall, a store for the cleaning machines too, plus a computer suite for Key Stage One. There are other areas that are being improved, which I hope will meet with your approval.
