SEPTEMBER NEWSLETTER, 2008

The start of the New Year has gone very smoothly. It was lovely to see so many happy smiling faces on the playground on Wednesday. Children eager to embrace new challenges and parents eager to get back to ‘normality’!
Thank you for all your lovely comments about the improvements to the learning environment for the children – Lots of staff and their families have been hard at work to make sure that Old Fletton School is a place where learning can take place in pleasant surroundings. We do realise that there is still a lot more work to do.
(it is not too late to volunteer for our makeover weekend – date tbc)

Homework
As promised we have looked at ways to improve the quality, frequency and value placed on homework. This issue was raised by many of you in the questionnaire last term. We are finalising the training on Wednesday 10th September ready to share with you and the children at a Parent’s Open Evening on Wednesday 17th September - more details to follow.

Communication
The money raised at the Sports Day event has been spent on a Parent Information Board for Year1 parents. This is just the start and we intend to raise funds for an Information Board for the main playground area too.
I intend to produce a monthly Newsletter; going out as early as possible each month so that you will have a rough idea of when to expect them. Remember too, that they are available on our website should your child be as forgetful as my 2 children are!
www.oldfletton.org.uk
School doors open at 8:40 am, use this time to see your child’s teacher should you wish to discuss a small matter. If there is need for a longer appointment then use this time to arrange a mutually convenient time. Remember - Working together is the key to success.
Of course should you wish to discuss anything with me then either, catch me on the playground in the morning, ring and make an appointment or pop in and see if I am available. I am not a Head teacher who locks herself away in the office with a ‘Do not Disturb’ sign! Although do be warned, once I do get talking it is hard to shut me up... typical teacher!

Values
The core values at Old Fletton have been shared with the children, staff and governors. Now it is your turn. Please talk to your child about their understanding of them.
We expect everyone in school to act and behave in accordance with our values.

Appointing a Deputy Head Teacher
During this first half term the governors and I will be working very closely with the Local Authority to appoint a new Deputy Head Teacher. This is a big decision and not one to be taken without due consideration and thus my decision to wait, I was not prepared to rush and potentially make a mistake.
The teachers and staff have already demonstrated their commitment to Old Fletton. There is a strong team spirit and a real desire to raise standards.  I will be expecting the same commitment, drive and passion from my deputy. I will keep you informed - Interviews are scheduled for October 22nd.

OFSTED
We are due an inspection anytime... I will let you know the date as soon as I do but we will only have a few days notice. The inspection, whatever the outcome, will enable us to celebrate our successes but also to address areas where there are still further improvements to be made.
