Writing
Intent:
At Old Fletton, we believe that every child should be provided with the knowledge, skills, and opportunities to become confident, secure, and enthusiastic writers across a range of genres. Our carefully considered book-based curriculum immerses children in high-quality texts, providing rich contexts that inspire and motivate. This approach helps pupils explore various genres and writing styles, deepening their understanding of language and enabling them to become more informed and purposeful writers. Each stage of the writing process is made explicit to support children’s understanding and skill development. Progress in learning and applying writing skills is carefully planned within each unit and across year groups, ensuring clear and consistent development.
Grammar is taught explicitly at its designated phase of the writing process and embedded through frequent review and practice. These grammar skills are closely aligned with the writing units and reinforced throughout.
Spelling instruction is delivered through the Read Write Inc. programme in ability groups and regularly assessed to monitor progress during the Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1. In Key Stage 2, spelling rules and patterns are taught and revised in line with the National Curriculum.
