Breadth of Reading

Ensuring children experience quality texts for as many aspects of the curriculum as possible

At Old Fletton Primary School, we believe that the explicit teaching of reading skills must be complemented by access to high-quality texts that enrich the wider curriculum. We carefully select texts that broaden children's knowledge, inspire curiosity, and deepen their understanding of the world around them.

To support this, we:

  • Make meaningful cross-curricular links through literature wherever possible.
  • Follow a book-based curriculum, encouraging pupils to draw on what they have read as inspiration and models for their own writing.
  • Use the Accelerated Reader programme, which provides access to levelled fiction and non-fiction texts to support reading development and comprehension.
  • Embed poetry throughout the writing curriculum, including opportunities for performance to build pupils’ confidence and develop oracy skills.

Our approach ensures that reading is not only taught but is at the heart of our curriculum, nurturing a love of books and language while supporting academic progress across all subject areas.
