British Values

Welcome to Our British Values Page!

At Old Fletton Primary School, we help our children grow into kind, thoughtful, and respectful citizens.  We primarily do this through our value of CARE, which totally aligns with the requirement to promote British Values. In addition, we use our Spiritual, Moral, Social, and Cultural (SMSC) education as part of the Jigsaw PSHE scheme; we teach and celebrate the British Values that help everyone live together happily and safely.

What Are British Values?

British Values are a set of principles that guide how we treat each other, how we live in society, and how we make our country a better place for everyone. There are five key British Values:

1. Democracy

At school, we teach children that everyone has a voice and a chance to be heard, but that adults make the final decisions in a primary school as they are learning how the world works.

  • We vote for Class Representatives.

  • We learn how decisions are made.
  • We take part in class discussions and express our views respectfully.

Democracy means working together to make things as fair as possible or everyone!

2. The Rule of Law

Rules help keep us safe and happy.

  • We learn about school rules, and why we must follow them.
  • We understand that laws in the wider world protect us too.
  • We think about right and wrong choices and how they affect others.

The rule of law helps everyone know what is expected and enables the school, and the world to run smoothly.

3. Individual Liberty

We encourage our children to make good choices and think for themselves.

  • We talk about how to stay safe while enjoying our freedoms.
  • We explore our own interests and talents. Knowing that learning and developing is a struggle, and we need to embrace challenges to succeed
  • We respect others’ choices even when they are different from ours.

Individual liberty means we can be ourselves and pursue our dreams!

4. Mutual Respect

Respect means being kind, polite, and thoughtful to others.

  • We listen when others are speaking and expect good manners from each other.
  • We celebrate achievements and differences.
  • We play and work together as a team.

Mutual respect builds strong friendships and happy communities.

5. Tolerance of Those With Different Faiths and Beliefs

Our school is a place where everyone is welcome.

  • We learn about different religions and cultures.
  • We ask questions and explore other people's traditions.
  • We understand that we can all believe different things and still be friends.

Tolerance helps us understand and care for people from all around the world.

Working Together

We experience and model these values every day—through lessons, assemblies and the way we treat each other. Our school is proud to be a place where everyone feels safe, respected and valued.

We believe in growing together through care, kindness, fairness and friendship!
