The children loved the tractor ride around the farm, getting up close to a variety of animals and learning all about how they are cared for. A highlight of the day was the Mill tour, where pupils discovered how grain is turned into flour and explored the site’s history.

We rounded off the visit with some well-earned fun in the soft play area, making it a memorable and enjoyable experience for everyone!

Students from year 6 helped to sell poppies, wristbands and keyrings, showing tremendous enthusiasm and respect.

It was wonderful to support Remembrance and the meaning behind the poppy. Their kindness and commitment were reflected in the steady stream of donations as staff and students alike contributed generously.

We are incredibly proud of everyone who took part—whether by volunteering to help with sales or by choosing to wear a poppy with pride. Together, our school community has made a meaningful contribution to a very worthy cause, raising £336.07.

Students and staff were invited to swap their uniforms for their favourite casual clothes, all in support of children in need.

The corridors were filled with colour, creativity and smiles as everyone proudly showed off their outfits. More importantly, the day highlighted our school’s spirit of kindness and generosity. Thanks to the participation of students, families and staff, we raised money to support important services and opportunities for children who need it most.

Events like Dress Down Day remind us that small actions can make a big difference. A big thank you to everyone who contributed and took part. Together, we’ve helped create positive change and had lots fun doing it!

Our school was proud to take part in Anti-Bullying Week, a national event that encourages students, staff and families to work together to create a safe, respectful and supportive environment for everyone.

The theme this year was “Power for Good”, reminding us that small acts of kindness—whether in the classroom, online or on the playground—can make a big difference.

Throughout the week, students took part in activities, including:

Class discussions and assemblies focused on friendship, empathy and respect, including a visit from our very own superheros

Odd Socks Day, a fun opportunity for everyone to celebrate individuality and stand up against bullying in all its forms

We encourage parents and carers to continue the conversation at home by talking with children about how to recognise bullying, how to seek help, and how to support others.

Together, we can ensure our school remains a place where every student feels valued, safe, and included.

Sunshine, Spirit, and Sportsmanship: Our Unforgettable Sports Day

This year’s Sports Day had an unexpected twist even before it began. The event had to be postponed due to soaring temperatures and concerns about sun safety. We made the decision to delay the big day. While this was a disappointment at first, the children took it in stride, displaying the same resilience and adaptability we’ve seen in them all year long. And if the skies gave us sunshine, the children brought the storm—a storm of athleticism, energy, and enthusiasm that turned the rearranged Sports Day into an unforgettable celebration.

KS2: Laughter, Leaps, and a Bit of Creative Rule-Bending

The week kicked off with a rousing round of Key Stage 2 events, where Years 3 through 6 took to the field with determination and a healthy dose of humour. The children gave their all, and the results were a wonderful reminder of the importance of both physical confidence and joyful participation.

One event in particular had everyone in fits of laughter: the bean bag on the head race. While the rules clearly stated that the bean bag was to remain on one’s head from start to finish, let’s just say that some children prioritised speed over balance. What followed was a brilliant display of creative interpretation. Some chose to dash forward with the bean bag clenched firmly in their hands, others made half-hearted attempts to balance before giving up and sprinting.

Of course, teachers and spectators couldn’t help but laugh along, and while we might have questioned the technique, we couldn’t fault the energy and spirit. After all, if rules must be broken, it might as well be in the name of fun and movement.

A House Divided (But Only by Points!)

As the morning wore on, scores began to build across the house teams. Yellow, Blue, Green, and Red each had their moments of glory, with event wins being distributed fairly evenly. By the end of the KS2 events, it was a first-place draw between Yellow and Blue, both teams having demonstrated exceptional strength across disciplines. The Green Team was just 2 points behind, and the Red Team followed closely with only 5 points separating them from the leaders. It was shaping up to be one of the tightest competitions we’ve seen in years!

With such narrow margins, it was clear that the final decision would come down to the younger students—those in Key Stage 1 and our Nest provision—to tip the scales and decide the fate of the house cup.

KS1 and The Nest: Balance, Bravery, and Brilliance

If anyone thought the younger children might falter under the pressure, they were sorely mistaken. As the KS1 children took to the field, the air was thick with excitement.

This time, the bean bag race saw some truly spectacular balancing. With poise and patience, the KS1 children stepped carefully along the track, eyes forward and backs straight, determined to keep their bean bags steady. There were some tense moments, a few dramatic wobbles, and more than one epic save as tiny hands darted up to catch a falling bean bag just in time. Their efforts were met with raucous applause from older children and adults alike. It was a clear reminder that while KS1 students may be smaller in stature, they are mighty in spirit and skill.

The Nest children also had their moment to shine. They had been preparing for this day for weeks, and it showed. With infectious enthusiasm, they participated in a range of challenges including jumps, balances, and runs, each adapted to meet their strengths and needs. Their teammates and teachers watched with pride as these children demonstrated just how far they'd come—physically, socially, and emotionally. It was a celebration of growth, inclusion, and progress, and it warmed every heart on the field.

The Final Event: The Full Team Bean Bag Relay

As the morning reached its peak, the time came for the grand finale—the full team bean bag relay. All eyes were on the track. The scores had been calculated, the points were tight, and it all came down to this. The sun dipped behind a cloud, the air stilled, and then… the whistle blew.

The race began in a blur of movement. Children ran, hopped, skipped, and in some cases, danced their way down the track, collecting their team's bean bag. And then, with one final surge, the outcome was sealed.

The Yellow Team have won Sports Day 2025 —by a single point.

Looking Back—and Forward

This year’s Sports Day reminded us why these traditions matter. It wasn’t just a day of physical activity—it was a day of connection. Parents and staff came together to cheer on not just their own children, but all children. Teachers swapped their usual roles for race officiators, baton counters, and bean bag catchers. Children of all ages collaborated, encouraged one another, and beamed with the joy of shared success.

We’d also like to thank everyone who made this day possible—from the staff and volunteers who set up the event, to the parents who provided snacks, cheers, and shade, to the children themselves who brought boundless enthusiasm and energy to every moment. It truly was a team effort.

Congratulations once more to Yellow Team, our 2025 House Champions. And congratulations to every runner, jumper, hopper, and cheerer who made Sports Day a triumph.

Here’s to teamwork, tenacity, and the thunderous joy of childhood. Until next year—keep running, keep smiling, and keep supporting one another.

Celebrating Sports Week at Old Fletton Primary School – Fun, Challenge, and Team Spirit!

Old Fletton Primary School was buzzing with energy, laughter, and determination as we celebrated Sports Week 2025! Each year group took on exciting new challenges, embracing physical activity in creative and adventurous ways.

Year 6 and Year 4: Reaching New Heights on the Climbing Wall

For many of our Year 6 and Year 4 pupils, the highlight of the week was tackling the climbing wall set up on the school playground. With harnesses on and helmets securely fastened, the children showed incredible courage and perseverance as they scaled the wall. It was inspiring to see so many pupils pushing themselves beyond their comfort zones and cheering each other on from below. The sense of achievement at the top – and the high-fives at the bottom – were moments to remember!

Year 5: Taking Aim with Archery

Year 5 swapped their usual PE lessons for something a little different – archery! Under the careful guidance of trained instructors, the children learnt how to safely handle a bow and arrow, taking aim at targets and developing their concentration and focus. There were plenty of cheers as arrows hit the bullseye, and pupils quickly discovered that archery is as much about patience and technique as it is about strength.

Year 3: Kicking Into Action with Taekwondo

Meanwhile, Year 3 had the opportunity to visit a local taekwondo dojo, where they learnt basic stances, kicks, and self-discipline techniques from experienced martial arts coaches. The children demonstrated fantastic enthusiasm, mastering new moves with impressive speed and showing great respect for the instructors and the traditions of the sport.

KS1 and Early Years: Dancing with Energy and Passion

Our youngest pupils in KS1 and Early Years took part in something truly special: learning the Haka and other sporting dance moves! The playground became a stage of rhythm and energy as the children stomped, clapped, and chanted their way through the Haka, followed by fun movement games and dance routines inspired by different sports cultures around the world. The children loved expressing themselves through movement, and their enthusiasm was infectious!

The Nest and KS1: Bouncing Through the Inflatable Obstacle Course

Finally, pupils in The Nest and KS1 had a fantastic time tackling the inflatable obstacle course. With tunnels to crawl through, walls to climb, and slides to zoom down, it was a real test of agility and balance – but mostly it was about having fun! Laughter echoed across the playground as children raced their friends and encouraged each other along the way.

A Week to Remember at Old Fletton Primary School

Sports Week 2025 was not just about physical activity; it was about teamwork, trying new things, building resilience, and having fun together. Whether climbing high, hitting a target, mastering a martial arts move, or dancing with passion, every child found a way to shine.

A big thank you to all the staff, visiting coaches, and volunteers who helped make this week such a huge success. We’re already looking forward to seeing what new adventures next year’s Sports Week at Old Fletton Primary School will bring!

We’re incredibly proud that our children continue to tell us they are happy in school and feel challenged by their learning. Their voices matter, and it’s reassuring to know that their daily experiences reflect the values we work so hard to uphold.

Our Bewilderwood Adventure!

Year 3 had an incredible adventure to Bewilderwood! After reading A Boggle at

Bewilderwood in our English lessons, we couldn’t wait to find out if Boggles and Twiggles

really existed. Spirits were high as we boarded the coach for our two-hour journey – the

sun was shining and excitement filled the air!

When we arrived, we had a quick snack to fuel our adventures… then it was time to

explore!

One of our first adventures was a boat ride across the Scaaaary Lake, where Mildred the

Crocklebog was lurking, ready to squirt us as we floated past! There were squeals and

laughter as we dodged the spray.

Next, we stepped into the magical heart of Bewilderwood. We zoomed along wobbly wires,

whooshed down huge slides, and tiptoed carefully across the Broken Bridge. We spotted

so many places from the book – the Boggle Village, the Twiggle Houses, and even the

Witch’s cottage!

One of the biggest challenges was the Sky Maze – but we didn’t get lost! Lots of us

managed to solve the clues and find our way back down.

Before we knew it, it was time to go home. We climbed onto the coach – a lot sleepier than

on the way and full of amazing memories. The journey home was much quieter… because

some of us were fast asleep, dreaming of Boggles, Twiggles, and a magical day in the

woods.

The children were able to use what they had learnt in the classroom and link it to their own experience.

A great day was had by all!

On Wednesday 19th April, Year 5 were very lucky to visit an important local development site on Shrewsbury Avenue (on the old Pedigree Petfood Site) - ISG Contractors and Crown invited the year group to visit the working building site for a new aluminium can production line. ISG provided us with full PPE including safety boots, high-vis vests, goggles, hard hats and ear defenders, as well as a bag of promotional items, all of which the children were able to take home! On arrival at the site we were welcomed by many members of the site team, were given lots of amazing information from not only the building site managers Neal and Antonio, but also the project manager Tony, head of HR Joanne and the overall site manager from Trebor, Glen.

The children discovered what happens before a project starts to ensure the local wildlife and ecology is not impacted, how staff are recruited and trained and how the fully automated production line and storage facility will operate. We were then given a guided tour of the site and were able to talk to many specialist contractors about their role in completing this massive project. We learned many facts about the energy consumed and used our maths skills to work out the exact amount of cans that can be produced every year… at 2,800 cans per minute, per production line, this is a huge calculation.

We will be writing detailed blogs on what we have learned and making sure we include as many details as we can, as well as discussing potential career opportunities in our PSHE lessons… you may find you have a budding CAD Designer or Project Manager on your hands!

We are very thankful to ISG for the opportunity and are looking forward to revisiting the site next year, when the product line is completed and running at full capacity.

After a brief intermission, it was time for Key Stage 2 to take to the stage with another closely run competition, now with Mrs White as part of the judging panel. Red Team started with a Greatest Showman medley, followed by Blue Team singing a rousing rendition of The Circle of Life and Yellow Team’s version of We’re All In This Together. The competition ended with Green Team rocking a Matilda anthem of A Little Bit Naughty! After another very close competition, Yellow Team were once again triumphant! All in all it was a phenomenal morning truly showing the best of our Fletton family!

The children were given the chance to share their favourite stories, complete work based on new and exciting texts and Year 6 worked with pupils in Year 2, sharing stories and their love of reading.

The day ended with all the classes continuing to read their shared story - something that has become a truly loved time in our school day.

Thank you for all the support from parents and carers in sorting and resourcing outfits and books - it is very much appreciated.

On Tuesday 21st February our Reception children arrived at school in their wellies, very excited as they were heading off for their first school trip to Sacrewell Farm!

As part of our 'Growing' topic this term, the children were going to get first hand experience of a real farm. On arrival at the farm, they listened carefully to the safety instructions delivered by the farm's staff and then divided into groups ready to start learning.

Throughout the day the groups had a chance to meet and brush a goat, pony and donkey and find out about how the animals are looked after on the farm. They had a guided tour of the 300 year old water mill and found out how wheat was turned into flour there. The highlight of the day for many of the children was a tour of the farm on the tractor, where they found out about how the land is used to grow different plants for food, including cabbages, broccoli, apples, pears and plums.

Much fun was had and energy expended on the adventure playground where the children were able to consolidate and extend their gross motor skills.

It was soon time to go back to school with some very tired but happy children (and grown-ups!). A fantastic day was had by all and the children now have lots of new knowledge and understanding that will be applied to their classroom learning.

Thank you to all of the grown ups who helped on the trip and the staff at Sacrewell Farm for making the day so memorable for the children.

On Thursday 2nd February, the Year 5 classes were treated to a fully immersive experience - living life as an Anglo-Saxon! Our hall was converted into an Anglo-Saxon village in which we learned the many skills used by our ancestors - from making beeswax candles, creating ink and writing on parchment, to archery and sword skills.

The day started early, with the children arriving in costumes, ready to experience life as an Anglo-Saxon. We were led by our Thane, Aelfled the Grey, who helped us learn to make ink, create rune bags in which to put our runes so that we can predict the future and learning how to use our swords, spears, bows and shields effectively to defeat the Danes, who wish to conquer our lands.

Aelfled was very knowledgable and taught us many historical facts about how the Anglo-Saxon language still influences our every day conversations and how the battles and agreements, between the Anglo-Saxons and Danes, shaped the United Kingdom as we know it today.

In the afternoon, Phil (our archaeologist) showed us how to excavate an historical dig and begin to understand the artefacts we found to piece together our understanding of Anglo-Saxon life. We even found a burial site, along with a monastery, a family house and the mystical home of an ancient seer! We also learned about how money was developed and how to smelt and create metal artefacts using our clay pots created during our morning session.

We will continue to use our text - Shield Maiden - to develop our understanding of the life and times of the King of Wessex and his family before we create our own diary entries detailing the events first hand as Aethleflaed, the Lady of Wessex.
